The scientific benefits of mindfulness are well documented.

-and makes you a flexible problem solver.

I spoke with India Arie on my podcast this week about her amazing mindfulness practices. She really embodies this in so many ways and has so much wisdom to share - and some of her mindfulness secrets will surprise you! You can check out the entire conversation at my link in bio @drjudyho.

Sometimes people don’t realize that a mindfulness practice can be just a few seconds of time. Or that mindfulness can involve a lot of movement or even full-on exercise. It’s just about bringing present-minded awareness to the moment RIGHT NOW, without worrying about the future or fixating on the past.

So here are five easy hacks to turn up your mindfulness game and make it work for your traits and preferences.

  • Tip 1: Start with little things. I think people think their practice has to be perfect but you can start just by eating a grape mindfully.

  • Tip 2: Commit to a daily practice. Journal mindfully without multitasking. Do a breathing exercise during your lunch break. It can be just 2-5 minutes a day!

  • Tip 3: Integrate into existing routines throughout the day. Mindful showers, mindful making coffee, mindful cooking, mindful breathing are just a few examples.

  • Tip 4: Sample and Select. Try different types of mindfulness practices and see what works best for you. We are all different and we will like different activities. My favorite mindfulness activity is a mindful walk - it’s mindfulness combined with movement.

  • Tip 5: Create stillness. This doesn’t mean physical stillness, rather, it means a stillness of mindset. Let your mind quiet down, and see what comes up. Just let your thoughts be and process them as they come.
